Neither the girlfriend or the dog likes them. However, Louder Than War’s Ioan Humphreys just loves Otoboke Beaver
So, from Kyoto, Japan come the tornado of noise that is Otoboke Beaver. And not before time to be honest. This band are absolutely brilliant and will be astonishing live. This record is a combination of their singles ‘Akimahenka’ ‘Otobokebeaver Dai Jikenbo’, paired with their debut album ‘Mokugeki! Love Me Sign’ & mini album ‘Konya Kagiri Nante Zettai Honto Ni Iwasenai !’. Oh and ‘Okoshiyasu’ is Kyoto slang for ‘welcome’. And welcome indeed they are as these girls just exude fun and mayhem, but have their feet firmly placed on the beer soaked sticky punk club floor. A lazy comparison would be Shonen Knife (with whom they have toured), but I would also say that they border more on the Melt Banana side, but are less abrasive and more tuneful.
Across the thirteen tracks, the band are 100mph and definitely turned up to 11 (did I just say that?) They are loud, proud (of their home), brash, fast, but very loveable at the same time.
Apparently the band are “influenced by western Riot Grrrl attitudes and the sounds of punk and angular post-rock”. I cannot disagree, but I think labeling them really takes away the fun from them. They play brilliant noisy, ballsy punk rock and sing in Japanese or Kyoto slang. I cant think of anything I would rather listen to at the moment. Both the GF and the dog bloody hate them, but they obviously have no taste. Okoshiyasu Otoboke Beaver!
