Brightons’ finest Art-Pop Post-Punk Quirk-Rock band CLOWwNs present a new video of the fan-favourite from their The Artful Execution Of Macho Bimbo album (on Bleeding Heart) which we reviewed here.
Their new mascot is part Anonymous/ V for Vendetta / Guy Fawkes mask and part man-sized Sock-Puppet which is completely in-keeping with their bizarre worldview.
Singer Miles Heathfield says of the song ( on their bandcamp)
We are dependant. Don’t ‘fool’ yourself into thinking otherwise. There’s no power in consumerism for the consumer, only bondage (“You standing on my hands”) and voices are stifled by corporate power. People are allowed their ‘token’ protest, but bills get passed and industry ploughs on regardless (“You corking up my mouth”).We are easy to fool. We want to be fooled (“I buy it, it’s so good”), and made to feel so lucky when we’ve ‘bought’ it (“You think ‘I’ good enough?”). Under the promise of longer lives (“A very slow decay”), anaesthetised (“No fury to excite”), we are not even worried by the quality of existence (“The dog that runs for sticks/No sight or smell of bone”) but just that it should continue, habitually, for as long as possible (“Just to feed the itch”).
So now, you know.
It’s not just a pretty tune but an existential howl about our slavery to consumerism.
Now watch it again and BUY BUY BUY the album! OBEY! CONSUME!
