6. The Streak ‘Bang Bang Bullet’
One of the things that united Nikki Sudden and Bomber Dave was a fondness for The Arrows’ Granada teatime TV show. The Streak contained two-thirds of them, including Jake Hooker – who had come over from the States and clearly brought something that would later be found in The Heartbreakers with him. This is their 1973 single.
7. Eddie and The Hot Rods ‘Wooly Bully’
Doing something that seemed more attainable than the older, more skilful, Dr Feelgood – they even looked like us during those perennial adolescent bad hair days. This is by no means their finest moment – but it is the one that made the connection between what was already in the air and that other ‘Punk’ repertoire.
8. Gumbo ‘We Don’t Care Now’
Got this on some strange Belgian 45 – the picture of a late 60s, satin shirted, show-band on the sleeve seems to have been thrown on at random. Surely this is a female singer, or maybe a 12 year old delinquent direct from the imagination of Richard Allen? Anyway he/she doesn’t care. And it’s very important not to care. Not about this world. Not about that Girl.
9. The Fast ‘Boys will be Boys’
Here’s another music destined for a different kitchen – some proto-pop punk direct from Max’s Kansas City, where The Fast have been inventing this stuff since the days of The Dolls.
10. Motorhead ‘Motorhead’
The ‘On Parole’ version with Larry Wallis – when they wanted to be the British MC5.
