Basic Bulat opens up this evening with an interstellar performance, filled with heartfelt songs and endearing stories.
Basia Bulat’s Good Advice was an immediate favourite and despite a UK tour earlier in the year chances to see her over here were scarce. However, this evening sees her opening for the equally exciting Lake Street Dive, yet the focus was on Basia’s set for us this evening. Taking to the stage alone she sets about thrilling the crowd, her short set is peppered with exciting and heartfelt tracks.
The likes of Tall Tall Shadow and Infamous as well as a cover of Leonard Cohen’s Ain’t No Cure For Love the lack of a band allowing her freedom to mix up the tracks more than she might usually. This solo performance also allows for the songs to take on a softer tone, with the depth and the sweetness exposed whilst not relying upon a cacophony of noise. Basia seems particularly humbled by the crowd’s enthusiastic response, and rightfully so as her set lights up the venue early on.
There isn’t the bombast or the power of Lake Street Dive but her delicate voice and exceptional songs are what we’re truly interested in. Her set is over all too soon as she leaves the stage having received a warm welcome from tonight’s packed crowd. Hopefully to return in the not too distant future, as for Lake Street Dive they up the tempo for most of their set with their impressive genre defying jams, whilst also giving each band member the opportunity to shine with emphatic solos as they put on a brilliant show.
