Maker hit London’s 100 Club on Thursday night. Naomi Dryden-Smith reports back with photoset and review for Louder Than War.
Hailing from Gillingham in Kent (and providing it with a much needed splash of colour) Maker have a lot going for them. Even before they come on stage, standing in the crowd watching the other acts, they have a magnetism that gets them noticed. The style is mod mullet, sharp dressing, vintage velvet. They look great.
It’s hard to listen to Marinelli’s rock/blues smoky voice without thinking of early Stewart with a splash of Weller and an occasional burst of Daltrey, perfect for Maker’s style of music. Style-wise, it’s a blend of Led Zep, Howling Wolf, Ram Jam and T-Rex and is straight out of Woodstock – it’s perfect summer festival fare.
Seemingly undaunted by the music royalty covering the walls of the legendary 100 Club, Maker treat us to a selection of tracks from their new EP, with a sprinkling of extra songs. The EP is excellent, great production by Nick Brine who has worked with the likes of Oasis and Stone Roses. The tracks are just as strong live, perhaps only lacking are the keyboards which give the EP extra finish, particularly on tracks like Dead Ends & Avenues and Happening. Maker deliver every song with the flourish of a major rock band, with Gavin Donaldson’s powerful drumming at the heart. This is underpinned by Andrew Donaldson‘s impressive guitar riffs, Austin’s inventive bass and Marinelli’s significant vocal abilities. The highlight of the set is the very catchy new release Move Your Feet, heavily steeped in rock-drenched punky blues. It’s not surprising that they have already supported Ocean Colour Scene and Pete Doherty. Venue notwithstanding, the audience is way smaller than this band deserves.
