Lovely Eggs

The Lovely Eggs ‘I Shouldn’t Have Said That’ (Egg Records)
Ltd Edition Black & White Vinyl | DL
Rel Date 3rd November 2017

New one from Lancaster’s finest rock ‘n’ roll lovebirds, and a fine taster for the next album ‘This Is Eggland’ which is due in February 2018; the previous whimsy of The Lovely Eggs has been replaced with 132 seconds of disciplined, gnarly guitar and drum mayhem courtesy of legendary producer Dave Fridmann who’s previous credits include both Mercury Rev and Flaming Lips.

Thankfully, Fridmann has been entirely sympathetic to Holly & David’s DIY staunch ethic, and instead of, as is often the case when ‘names’ are drafted in smoothing out the edges, he has refined their sound, and allowed a deliciously darker, heavier and altogether more sinister vibe to rain down.

Holly’s vocal, an almost contemptuously spat out, barbed apology riding David’s motorik beat with all manner of sonic weirdness raging just under the mix; it harks back to the genius of ‘Don’t Look At Me (I Don’t Like It)’ whilst at the same time blazing a path forwards as evidenced further via the ridiculously brief ‘Melody For Meathead’ on the flip side, a 52sec maelstrom of egged up psychedelic rage delivered with the subtlety of a lump hammer – glorious!!

Its short (very short), sweet and comes on Black and White vinyl, I’m guessing it was intended to be splattered, its more squashed together, but then that’s the joy of The Lovely Eggs!
