Esme Bridie

Today It Rains

Klee Music

Released 23 March 2018

Vinyl / DL

8/10

Today It Rains released on Klee Music is the debut release from  young Merseysider Esme Bridie. It is a remarkable mature album, considering Esme’s youth, and it illustrates her gift for song-writing and poetic lyricism.

This set of twelve compositions deals with the usual life themes of love and loss, redemption and guilt, but from the view of the view of someone born at the cusp of the 21st Century. It is easy to recognise her influences, ranging from Joni Mitchell, June Tabor and The Oysterband, Joan Baez and the Celtic atmosphere of The Waterboys at their finest.

Today It Rains was recorded in sections, between visits home from Leeds University, under the watchful eye of producer Colin McKay, who recently completed Thomas Lang’s The German Alphabet and had previously worked with the diverse likes of Martin Hannett, Half Man, Half Biscuit, and a considerable stint as house engineer for the Liverpools legendary Deltasonic label.

This debut album successfully showcases Esme’s considerable compositional skills and her obvious ear for melody. Add to this her lyrical mastery, and what you have is a musical work of true beauty and strength – the original meaning of the word Bridie. Apt indeed.
