On the night that Mark E Smith left the building it seems somewhat fitting that in the back room of one of the boozers he would sometimes frequent another future is taking shape.
Whilst the front room is playing Fall classics all night, LA’s Sextile are dealing a great new noise. The four-piece band are delivering a powerful and hypnotic electricity – like many bands on the Felte label they are immersed in the deep dark heart of so-called Goth music digging all kinds of wild and thrilling influences from the artful heart of the scene and making them their own.
Their powerful rush of sound hints at the throbbing electronics of Suicide, the feedback drenched rush of The Jesus and Mary Chain, the genius deconstruction of the guitar of Daniel Ash plus the pervy dancefloor shenanigans of DAF. This is Giorgio Moroder through a fuzzbox or a No Wave nervous breakdown for the new millennium and an acidic political edge in these dark and dangerous times.
Two albums in and their tense, claustrophobic and enthralling live show manages to take these inspirations and create their own glorious hypnotic rush of songs that machine gun at you at barely two minutes for each salvo. This rush of ideas says a lot about the band and also the fact that they manage to make it sound like 2018. Sextile are skinny young freaks playing to a packed room of nodding heads and have caught the moment perfectly. Just when we needed a new noise, Sextile have turned up and they are your new favourite band.
This is a tense, tactile, dark post-punk industrial Korg- throb, an art-punk soundtrack to the underbelly of the city that you can dance to, a tense, hypnotic and twitching brilliance, this is the new noise and by the autumn we are all going to be in love with Sextile.
