Worker/Parasite — Depth Charge (Classicworks)
Out: September 21, 2015
DL | LP
Worker/Parasite advance the resurgence of acid techno with new five track EP that will delight and confuse.
There seems to have been a rebirth – a second or perhaps third coming – of acid inspired techno music over the last year to 18 months. What with the likes of Ekoplekz and the recent cracking return of AFX, among others, new sound acid, and oldschool-in-a-newschool 303-led productions, seem to be increasing in number.
The impressive thing is that it all rarely sounds dull or disappointing (unlike, say, the majority of the recent(ish) resurgence of another 90s genre; the mostly yawn-inducing shoegaze or ‘deampop’ current generation).
The latest record to reward those lucky enough to come across acid music mark III (like your possibly good selves, as of now in fact) is the new EP from Bay Area producer Worker/Parasite in the shape of the five track Depth Charge release, which also happens to be out on September 21 via the Classicworks label.
Opener Alam al-Mithal begins things with a repetitive and awkward acidic gait and a skip-along tick drum, but it’s with follower track LDB-1 Tool that things become more interesting; powdery, slightly distorted hi-hat coming over all wholesomely warped and leftfield. One could imagine this one being dropped down the club and those in attendance not sure whether to dance or look on confused. Either way both reactions might well be pretentious.
Bene Gesserit is almost as lo-fi, only not quite so much; its funky, hotshot acid rhythms twist and cajole as it confidently bounces upward and onward in majestic style; while Crysknife, and the knife-twisting, poisonous final track, DistortxOx, continue the steady, in-yer-face rawness and garage-y techno misshapes to wonderfully unwashed effect. Depth Charge is a most enjoyable release of acid techno in its most bonkers and purist form.
