Roisin Murphy
Albert Hall, Manchester
25th November 2015
Louder Than War photographer Melanie Smith heads down to Manchester to catch up with recent Mercury Prize nominee Roisin Murphy in her new show on the Hairless Toys UK Tour.
From my perched position on the balcony I spy a myriad of assorted colourful, glittery accessories strewn by the Mic stand of former Manchester resident and one half of Moloko duo, Roisin Murphy as she made her entrance onto the stage in a bizarre fashion. Picture the scene….a video guy is close up filming her live, whilst projected onto the big screen, her eyes devour us as she serenades us quietly into her microphone with her back to the audience.
During my three songs, she used several items from her dressing up box, but I have it on good authority throughout the evenings entertainment she changed her hats, masks and outfits several times over, stating that she “always loved dressing up as a child”.
The queen of electro has unusual contralto vocals, mixed with a visually eccentric performance, combine to make this a show not to be missed. Hopefully you and I will catch her next time around, lets hope she has more props to entertain and enthral us. In the meantime I am playing loud the nominated album Hairless Toys…
